The Philharmonia Quartett Berlin will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Meany Hall.

Founded in 1984 by the principal concertmaster and the string section leaders of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, this ensemble has toured extensively in Europe, Asia, and throughout North and South America. The ensemble’s musical range is considerable, with a discography including recordings of works by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Beethoven, Shostakovich, and Reger. This performance will mark their Meany Hall debut.

The program for the Jan. 18 concert includes String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat Minor, Op. 138, by Shostakovich; String Quartet in E Minor, Op. 59, No. 2, by Beethoven; and String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10, by Debussy.

Hailed as “four of the best” by the British press after their debut at Wigmore Hall in London two decades ago, the Philharmonia Quartett Berlin has celebrated a critically acclaimed career, establishing itself among the world’s premier string quartets with 20 years of international concerts. Quartet members are Daniel Stabrawa, violin; Christian Stadelmann, violin; Neithard Resa, viola; and Dietmar Schwalke, cello.

Tickets for the Philharmonia Quartett Berlin are $36 general, $34 for faculty and staff and $20 for students. Tickets may be purchased by phone at 206-543-4880, online or in person at the UW Arts Ticket Office.
