“Alas, the one day we scheduled for filming ended up being one of the two closure days last week!” Wender wrote in an e-mail.  “Marko [the reporter] and his cameraman were very eager to film in a location that would show the prepossessing nature of the UW campus to best effect.  However, given the closure, we were limited to my rather unprepossessing office, and to a couple of buildings for which I have keys.”

So Wender gave UWPD a call, and through the “very kind assistance and cooperation” of Sgt. Tawan Pratt-Wieburg and Officer Ginger Banyai-Riepl, was able to arrange for Banyai-Riepl to unlock Suzzallo and stand by while the interview was filmed in the Graduate Reading Room.

“In a nutshell, the TV crew was surprised and delighted that a police department would take the time to assist as UWPD did,” Wender said. “And from my perspective, Tawan and Ginger’s kindness and flexibility demonstrated the service orientation that is the hallmark of excellent policing.”

“The resources of Smithsonian Folkways offer documentary recordings (both audio and video) of many of the world’s musical expressions, and allow those engaged in education at any level the opportunity to understand and celebrate the many splendors of our cultural heritage–and those of others in the world,” Campbell says.  “I’m honored to be a part of the archive activities, and hope for even further connections of the Folkways ‘global sounds’ to teachers and their students.”
