John McLaughlin

John McLaughlin

A household name since the early ’70s, McLaughlin was an innovative fusion guitarist when he led the Mahavishnu Orchestra and has continued living up to his reputation as a phenomenal and consistently inquisitive player through the years. His impressive resume includes such pivotal gigs as his debut stint in UK crooner Georgie Fame’s big band, a term in the celebrated Graham Bond Quartet, and key roles in Miles Davis’ groundbreaking electric ensemble (playing with Miles on In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew, On The Corner, Big Fun and A Tribute to Jack Johnson) and drum great Tony Williams’ group Lifetime.

In addition, he has jammed with everyone from Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones to Carlos Santana and avant-garde piano baroness Carla Bley. Accordingly, it comes as no surprise that McLaughlin is considered one of the most influential and technically gifted guitarists of all time.

That evening, also in Brechemin, you can hear UW voice students of Thomas Harper and Kari Ragen present their fall quarter recital. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 cash or check at the door. For further information, check the School of Music website or call 206-685-8384.
