Jazz ensembles to perform at School of Music Dec. 1, 2

Student musicians perform jazz Dec. 1 and 2.

 

The ensemble Five Loco will play “African Skies,” by Michael Brecker; “Effendi,” by McCoy Tyner; “Alone,” by Don Ellis; and  “Dance of the Jazz Fascists,” by Charlie Hunter. Five Loco consists of Andy Short on guitar, Nick Rogstad on Trombone, Leeran Raphaely on piano, Dan ONeil on drums and James Prow on bass. They are coached by Cuong Vu.

An ensemble consisting of Ray Larsen, trumpet; Gus Carns, piano; Evan Woodle, drums, Bryan Van Pelt, tenor sax; and Carmen Rothwell, bass; will play  “The Fact,” by Bryan Van Pelt; “Ramblin,” by Ornette Coleman; “Equilibrium,” by Ray Larsen; and  “After the Fact,” by  Human Feel. They are coached by Marc Seales.

The ensemble Aphid will play “Stella by Starlight,” by Victor Young (arr. Sharif); “Artifacts in Rain,” by Levi Gillis; “Cloud Stopper,” by Skuli Sverrisson; and “Reconnoitering,” by Chris Speed. The group, coached by Cuong Vu, includes Brennan Carter on Trumpet, Levi Gillis on tenor sax, colin Pulkrabek on trombone, Mark Hunter on bass, Jarred Katz on drums and Cameron Sharif on piano.

Plywood and Plastic, an ensemble coached by Marc Seales, will play  “Breaking the Girls,” by Red Hot Chili Peppers (arr K. Mines); “Work Song,” by Cannonball Adderly (arr. C. Provence); and “Drown in My Own Tears,” by Henry Gibson. Ensemble members are Kelsey Mines, bass; and Collin Provence, piano.

An ensemble consisting of MeeSun Hong on piano and Abbie Lorensen on bass will perform  “My Funny Valentine,” by Richard Rodgers/Lorenz Hart; and “Dont Get Around Much Anymore,” Dby uke Ellington/Bob Russ. They are coached by Marc Seales.

And finally, the ensemble The Nick and Sam Club with Special Guests, coached by Luke Bergman, will play “Cold Sweat,” by James Brown (arr. Nick Davis); “Crosscurrents,” by Lennie Tristano; “Moment of Inertia,” by Sam Wallen; and “Breakout,” by Lettuce. Members include Nick Teal on drums, Sam Wallen on alto sax, Sam Hylton on piano, Abi Kalkura on tenor sax and Hamody Hindi on guitar.
