Etc: Campus News & Notes

DAILY DELIGHT: The UW student newspaper, The Daily, competed at the National College Media Conference recently, and cleaned up. The publication won Best of Show, based on newspapers published since the school year began, as well as the Pacemaker Award, which is the college newspaper equivalent of the Pulitzer. The Pacemaker is based on coverage and content, quality of the writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of indepth reporting, layout and design and photography, art and graphics.


Daily staffers also picked up some individual awards:



  • Story of the Year, Diversity – Colin Gorenstein
  • Story of the Year, Editorial – Casey Smith
  • Story of the Year, Multimedia – Joanna Nolasco and staff
  • Third Place Infographic – Colleen Kirsten
  • Honorable Mention Newspaper Page 1 – Colleen Kirsten
  • Honorable Mention Newspaper Page Spread – Marlee Gross


The Daily staff is advised by Kristin Millis, who said the publication has never done quite so well at any conference. The awards were sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press.
