UW Pediatric Dentistry names new residency program director

Dr. Marcio Da Fonseca has been named director of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry’s Post-Graduate/Residency Program, Dr. Joel Berg, chair of pediatric dentistry, has announced.

 

Da Fonseca, who had been director of Inpatient Care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, succeeds interim residency program director Dr. Joseph Kelly. In addition to his duties as residency program director, Da Fonseca will build relationships with pediatric disciplines at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

 

“Dr. Da Fonseca brings much expertise, experience and talent to the position and is a nationally recognized advocate for oral care for patients with special health-care needs,” Berg said. “I am convinced that he brings the right mix of clinical, teaching, research and administrative skills to do an outstanding job.”

 

Da Fonseca completed dental school in Brazil, a master’s degree in pediatric dentistry at the University of Minnesota, a fellowship in pediatric dentistry at The Children’s Hospital in Denver, and a fellowship in oral medicine at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. He has served on the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco; University of Michigan and Ohio State University.

 

Berg added, “I am grateful that Dr. Kelly will be available to pass along the valuable information and experience that he has accumulated in his time as interim director and to work closely with Dr. Da Fonseca during his first few months in our department.”
