Campus Destination: The Conference Room Gallery, UW Health Sciences T-Wing

While navigating the warren of corridors in the Health Sciences T-Wing, be on the lookout for the Conference Room Gallery, in room T-269. Here, in a once featureless meeting room, faculty, staff and visitors may now regularly enjoy exhibitions of art that offer a welcome break from the routine.

“The space was boring, unadorned and not very stimulating,” notes Patti Doll, a member of the Poster Production Team at UW Creative Services and longtime staff member at the UW, who conceived the Conference Room Gallery in 2009. “By showcasing work by local and UW artists in group and solo exhibitions that change monthly, we’ve given a bit more personality to the space. We hope to bring moments of reflection and inspiration to visitors and staff members alike.”

During its first year, the gallery presented works in a wide range of media, including photography, illustration, assemblage, mosaic, digitally-worked collage and mixed media, by UW artists Sanford Barnes, Eberhard Fetz, Tess Morgan, Deborah Hughes, and Ian Painter, among others. “We are surrounded by wonderfully imaginative people—post docs, faculty members, scientists and clinicians. They enjoy the opportunity to share their art with others, and we are energized by their creativity,” says Doll.

Kari Berger, an artist and colleague whose work will be featured in the gallery beginning April 1, says: “Patti’s idea has given new richness and flavor to a small corner of the otherwise pretty dreary Health Sciences Building. People in the area really look forward to seeing what’s new each month.”

Participating artists appreciate the chance to exhibit their work in a friendly, non-threatening environment, and welcome the feedback the exhibitions inspire. Since the gallery operates in both the physical and electronic realms, viewers can visit the exhibitions in person or remotely and offer their impressions. On-line postings have been received from viewers worldwide.

Doll manages the space simply and efficiently. Anyone is eligible to show their two-dimensional work in the Conference Room Gallery. Applications are accepted and reviewed continuously. Once an artist is approved and scheduled, they receive assistance as needed. They can coordinate an opening reception, and offer a special event, such as a lunchtime talk.

The Conference Room Gallery’s website features details about and images from the current exhibition, useful links to related resources, and maps and directions to the gallery.

Whether you are seeking a moment of respite, a dose of inspiration, or an alternative world view, a visit to the Conference Room Gallery is time well spent. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., unless a conference has been scheduled.
