Flutist Donna Shin to perform Jan. 17

Faculty flutist and assistant professor of music Donna Shin will perform at 5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 17, in Brechemin Auditorium. She will be joined by UW faculty oboist Shannon Spicciati and pianist Casey Robards of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

The three will perform music from around the world, highlighting the European virtuoso tradition, sounds from the Orient, and dance inspirations from Latin America. Works by Busser, Taktakishvili, Goosens, and Muczynski round out the program as well as folk and ritual music from South America, Central and East Asia.

Shin has been praised for her beautifully-spun phrases, seductive sound, sterling technique, and charismatic exchanges with the audience. Described as “dazzling” by the Boston Globe, Shin has built an enviable reputation as a versatile performer of solo, chamber, orchestral, jazz and ancient Asian repertoire. She frequently appears as artist-performer and master class clinician at universities and flute clubs throughout the country, modeling the artist-teacher path for young flutists.

Shin has been featured in solo performances with the Korean National Symphony Orchestra, Eastman Philharmonia, New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble, University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble, Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble, and UW Wind Ensemble, among others. She will premiere D. J. Sparr’s Concerto for Flute and Wind Ensemble with the UW Wind Ensemble in Meany Hall and at the upcoming March 2010 Japan concert tour.

Tickets for the concert are $10, cash or check at the door. For more information, call 206-685-8384 or visit online here.</A.
