Statement from University of Washington President Mark Emmert on Gov. Gregoire’s State of the State Address

“The Governor and the Legislature obviously face a monumental challenge this session to develop a balanced operating budget. Their willingness to examine all options to provide citizens the services they need and expect from the state is commendable. In particular, I want to applaud Governor Gregoire for remarks in her State of the State Address today calling for restoration of critical funding for the State Need Grant program and for competitive tuition flexibility for our public universities. A strong higher education system that provides opportunities for all citizens is the best way for Washington state’s economy to recover in the long term.”
