A plethora of musical performances from the School of Music

The School of Music will have two events to choose from on Monday, Dec. 7, with four others to follow later in the week.


The Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Tom Collier, will present an evening of contemporary percussion music in Meany Studio Theater. The group will premiere a new piece by graduate percussion student Peter Schmeeckle titled Leaving The Sixth Floor. Schmeeckle also will be the featured soloist on a piece by Murray Houllif, Virtuoso for Drumset Soloist and Percussion Ensemble. The Percussion Ensemble also will perform David Maslanka’s Crown Of Thorns.

Meanwhile, at Brechemin Auditorium, voice students of faculty artists Tom Harper, Joyce Guyer, and Jane Eaglen will present a program of holiday and Christmas music of different styles and languages, including selections by Mozart, Adam, Wolf, Handel, Bach, and Humperdinck.


The voice concert is also at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5, cash or check at the door.


On Wednesday, Dec. 9, student jazz ensembles led by Cuong Vu will perform original compositions and arrangements from the jazz literature. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. in Meany Theater. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Arts Ticket Office, 206-543-4880, or online .


And on Thursday, Dec. 10, there’s a triple bill to choose from. UW voice students, under the direction of faculty artist Thomas Harper, present scenes from operas, including Menotti’s The Medium; Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni, and Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail; Smatana’s Bartered Bride; and Humperdinck’s Haensel und Gretel.


That concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in Meany Studio Theater. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Arts Ticket Office, 206-543-4880, or online .


At the same time upstairs in Meany Theater, the combined bands will present a concert titled Passport. Participating groups the UW Wind Ensemble, Campus and Concert Bands transport listeners on a musical journey with a program including Suite from Hymn of the Highlands, by Philip Sparke; Bulgarian Dances, by Franco Cesarini; The Gumsuckers March, by Percy Grainger; Ceremonial, by Bernard Rands; In Wartime, by David Del Tredici; and Paris Sketches, by Martin Ellerby.


The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Timothy Saltzman, the Campus Band by Kristin Cummings and Gary Brattin and the Concert Band by Vu Nguyen, Ethan Chessin and Allison Farley.
