Volunteers needed for Dream Project’s annual admissions workshop weekend

Volunteer tutors are needed Saturday and Sunday Nov.14 and 15 to help local high school students write competitve college application essays.

The event is called the Dream Project, and those who volunteer will be helping these more than 300 students achieve the dream of getting into college. The Dream Project is a student-initiated high school outreach program that assists first-generation and low-income students in Seattle area high schools with the college admissions process, including SAT prep, applications, writing essays, applying for financial aid and finding scholarships.

Volunteers should be comfortable working with students, able to help students formulate their ideas into a strong college application essay, have solid writing skills and a general understanding of the college admissions process.

Volunteer tutors are needed to work with students one-on-one. Students who attend the weekend often come in with nothing and leave having submitted a completed college application. A short training session will be provided for all volunteers on the unique needs of a college application essay.

Volunteers are asked to commit to at least three hours and are encouraged to stay the entire day or both days. Lunch will be provided. The event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, in Mary Gates Hall.
