Eileen Bulger named Harborview Emergency Services director

Dr. Eileen Bulger has accepted the position of director for Emergency Services at Harborview Medical Center (HMC). Bulger takes over from Dr. Michael Copass, who originated the position and served in it for the past three decades. In this position, Bulger has the leadership responsibility for oversight of medical care provided by all participating services in the HMC Emergency Department, and for ensuring the highest standards for quality and safety in that environment.

Bulger, UW associate professor of surgery, attended Johns Hopkins University as an undergraduate and attended Cornell University for medical school. She came to the UW in 1992 for surgical training, and joined Harborview in 2000 after completing a surgical critical care fellowship. She was the associate director for emergency surgical services at Harborview from 2000 to 2008. She served as the president of the medical staff in 2007. Among her many activities, she is active in the state trauma system, serving as the chair of the Trauma Medical Directors Technical Advisory Committee. She is a successful researcher with numerous grants and publications in the domain of trauma resuscitation. Bulger had been serving as acting director for Emergency Services since Copass began transitioning out of the position last November.
