Sounds of gospel and student compositions coming from School of Music

The School of Music will present songs and hymns from its 100-voice Gospel Choir on May 26 and contemporary works by student composers on May 27, both in Meany Theater.


Phyllis Byrdwell will lead the Gospel Choir in songs of praise and revelation, hymns, call-and-response numbers and other expressions of the gospel tradition, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26.


The following evening, also at 7:30, music students will perform works by UW graduate student Jeremy Jolley, two pieces by guest composer Marvin Lamb; and Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, conducted by Julia Tai.

Then at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 29, in Brechemin Auditorium, the Composers Workshop will feature UW student composers presenting original works.


Program selections will include Each Life Converges to Some Centre, a work for voice and piano by Katya Soudek; Essai Sur une Dialectique Dans le Continu, a work for flute, viola, guitar, and percussion by Jeremy Jolley; an untitled intermedia work for computer-realized sound and animation by Donald Craig; and Nicodemus, a work for bassoon, oboe, harp, and viola by Michelle McKenzie.
