Staiger appointed UWMC medical director

Dr. Thomas Staiger was recently appointed medical director for the UW Medical Center. Staiger, UW associate professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, had been serving as interim director since July 2008.

Staiger is a graduate of the UW School of Medicine, and of the UW’s primary care internal medicine residency. He has served as an associate medical director at UWMC since 2001 and has extensive experience in operational quality improvement.

Staiger is active in the Society of General Internal Medicine and serves as chairman of the society’s Clinical Care Subcommittee. His academic interests include the diagnostic evaluation of low back pain, the use of antidepressants to treat chronic pain, physician-patient communication, and educating physicians regarding leadership and quality improvement.

In the announcement to staff last month, UWMC Executive Director Stephen Zieniewicz said Staiger will play a critical role at UWMC in facilitating quality improvement, patient safety, service excellence, and strong clinical teaching programs. “He will work closely with other leaders of the UW Medicine health system as we focus on enhancing the excellence of our clinical, teaching and research programs.”
