10th annual Home Improvement Fair in Mary Gates on April 8

Has the down economy got you thinking of improving the value of your home? The 10th annual UW Home Improvement Fair will host vendors and exhibitors who can help with this and much more. And you might win a cool door prize along the way.

The fair, sponsored by HomeStreet Bank, will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, in the Mary Gates Hall Commons, and is free and open to all faculty and staff.

Whether you live in a house, an apartment or a condo, you’ll find tips on how to make your home more energy-efficient and ecologically friendly. In addition to energy-conservation resources, fair exhibitors will include landscaping and gardening, home financing, general contracting, interior design and furnishings.

Products and services represented include a handyman business and companies that do lighting, cabinets, painting, doors, windows and vinyl siding, among others.

There’s even a firm that does sustainable gardening and edible landscaping. WE Design is a landscaping company that offers design, installation and maintenance of “sustainable landscapes that provide food, privacy, shade and enjoyment for you and your family.”

Also on hand at the fair will be Tim Lawless, host of the popular home improvement program that airs 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays on KVI radio.

Oh, and there will be door prizes, too. These will include books about gardening and landscaping, gift certificates for a Mr. Handyman and Feng Shui workshops, and — the main door prize — a “Big Green Egg” medium sized ceramic cooker from Fireside Hearth & Home. Throughout the fair, representatives of Seattle City Light will be handing out complimentary compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Exhibitors for the 10th annual Home Improvement Fair include:

  • HomeStreet Bank
  • Fireside Home & Hearth
  • Habitat for Humanity retail outlet
  • Griff ‘n’ Hook Green Remodeling
  • Seattle City Light
  • Puget Sound Energy

The UW has partnered with HomeStreet Bank since 1998 to provide the Hometown Loan Program, which offers reduced fees on mortgages for UW faculty and staff buying or refinancing a home anywhere in the Puget Sound region.
