Who’s watching? UW units are finding out in UWTV report

News and Information

This week, for the first time, some 60 UW units are learning more about who is watching their videos produced through UWTV.

UWTV’s first annual report isn’t just a glossy overview of the past year. Each of the units that have produced programs will receive a detailed look at who is watching and how they’re accessing the programs. All programs air on the cable station and also are downloadable through www.uwtv.org. In addition, the programs are also available on the ResearchChannel, and can be downloaded through www.researchchannel.org as well as ResearchChannel’s YouTube and iTunes channels.

ResearchChannel is a national consortium of the nation’s leading research institutions. Its programming is available to more than 35 million U.S. satellite and cable television subscribers; its Web site, www.researchchannel.org, is visited by 2 million visitors each year. The ResearchChannel is based at the UW and about 60 percent of its programming is from the UW.

UWTV reaches a potential audience of 2 million households in Washington through cable systems and satellite. Its videos have been viewed online in the past year by more than 4.5 million people from 210 countries. In all, the operation produced 203 new programs in 2008, more than in any other year.

UWTV has an audience of 120,000 Puget Sound viewers each week.

Given the tight budget times, UWTV is offering a leaner option for those who want to produce videos. They are providing single-camera production, which reduces both the live production costs and post-production editing. “We want everyone at the UW to take advantage of UWTV’s tremendous local, national and global distribution,” says Phillippa Kassover, senior director of UWTV.
