Symphony bassist to perform at March 15 concert

Joe Kaufman, recently appointed assistant principal bass for the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, is the special guest for a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 15 in Brechemin Auditorium. The event is part of the Barry Lieberman and Friends series.

An Idaho native, Kaufman has played the double-bass since age 12, but it wasn’t until college that he began formal instruction on the instrument. Early guidance on the bass came from his father, an avid jazz guitarist, who introduced him to the music of many of the great jazz bassists.

In college, Kaufman studied with David Yavornitzky, Principal Bass of the Utah Symphony, and later with renowned soloist Jeff Bradetich at the University of North Texas. He was a member of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra for one year before joining the Seattle Symphony in 2005. He can also be seen as bassist with local singer-songwriter group, Bill Patton and the Credentials.

For the concert, Kaufman and Francoise Papillon, piano, will perform works by Misek, Hindemith and more. Papillon, a native of Montreal, has performed as a recitalist and participated in music festivals in Canada, the United States, Russia, the British Isles, Ireland, and in most countries on the Continent. She has studied at the Ecole de Musique Vincent-d’Indy, the Universite de Montreal, the Manhattan School of Music in New York (with Ruth Laredo), and the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin (with John O’Conor). She is currently a doctoral student of the UW’s Craig Sheppard.

Kaufman will lead a master class with UW music students at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, also in Brechemin Auditorium. The class is free and open to the public for observation. Tickets are $10, cash or check at the door.
