UW Photographers Group opens exhibition March 16

Word Play: Prose, Poetry and Myth is the title of a new show by the UW Photographers Group that opens Monday, March 16 in the Skylight Gallery in the UW Medical Center.

The group has taken on a kind of double take with this third invitational exhibition. They play with those surrogates of reality: language and photography, taking on words, poetry and myth, forming their own picture of an idea or thought that might stay on the mind as a personal memory, or jolting perceptions of what is and what isn’t — knowing full well that the look of truth is layered and elusive.

A word or a picture is always half someone else’s, and here, the artists, populated by their own intentions, take the opportunity to re-create the words with their eyes and the camera lens — the words becoming a backdrop for a new layer of photographic form and meaning. Perhaps viewers will enjoy the path the artists take here, or better yet, conjure up a path of their own.

The photographers whose work is in the show are Sanford Barnes, Kari Berger, Anita Bingaman, Maria Festing, Deborah Conger Hughes, Ian Painter, Debra Stevens, Martha Thomas and Alexis Vergalla.

There will be an opening reception for the artists from 5:30 to 7:30 Tuesday, March 17, in the gallery. The exhibition will run through April 30.
