Dance majors concert features work by undergraduates

The UW Dance Program will present its annual showcase of new work by undergraduate students March 5-8 in Meany Studio Theater. The concert features both the diversity of the current student body and the diversity that defines dance as a performing art.

This concert offers an opportunity for students to share their emerging, creative, and artistic voices with the community and also serves as a culminating performance experience for both the undergraduate choreographers and dancers involved. The process begins early each school year with open auditions and culminates with the public performances in March. Within the span of about five months, students choreograph their work, audition and rehearse, select costumes and music and take advantage of the opportunity to work with a professional lighting designer. Along the way, they also learn about marketing, scheduling rehearsals and showings, ticketing and all the other issues involved in presenting.

The dance pieces in the concert are as different as the student choreographers. Monique Courcy bucks tradition with her homoerotic male solo utilizing a headless mannequin. In her group piece, Katrina Hamilton assembles a collage of recognizable and historic dance vocabulary developed from her training and research. Athletic and playful movement is at the heart of David Lorence’s work for a strong group of male dancers. These dances and many more await audiences at the concert.

Performances run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are $14, $12 for UW faculty/staff, UWAA members and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the UW Arts Ticket office at 4001 University Way NE, by calling 206-543-4880 or online at www.meany.org
