Pianist Nelita True to perform Feb. 21

Nelita True, professor of piano at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, will perform works by Beethoven, Faure, Liszt, and more in a visiting artist recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, in Brechemin Auditorium.


True will perform Beethoven’s Sonata in E-Flat Major, Op. 31, No. 3 and the Ginastera First Piano Sonata, among other works. Her recital is part of The Donald E. Petersen and Ruth Sutton Waters Guest Piano Series, a new series organized by UW faculty artists Craig Sheppard and Robin McCabe to bring world-class concert pianists to the School of Music for performances and master classes.


Since her debut at age 17 with the Chicago Symphony and her New York debut with the Juilliard Orchestra, True’s career has taken her to the major cities of Western and Eastern Europe, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Mexico, Iceland, New Zealand, Brazil, Australia, Canada, and to Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as to 49 states in America.


True has been a visiting professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia and has been in the People’s Republic of China more than a dozen times for recitals and master classes. She has played recitals on French national television and on Australian national radio. Formerly a faculty member with the University of Maryland, True is currently professor of piano at the Eastman School of Music. Many of her students have won top prizes at national and international competitions, including an unprecedented five first prizes in national competitions.


True also will lead a master class with UW piano students at 3 p.m. Friday, February 20, also in Brechemin Auditorium. Admission to the master class is free and open to the public for observation.
