Breast cancer study seeks participants

Breast cancer affects one woman in nine during her lifetime, and the risk increases with age. Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center seeks postmenopausal women for a study to determine whether certain medications can prevent breast cancer in those at increased risk. The Excel Study will test the effectiveness of an estrogen reducer.

Participants must be willing to travel to Seattle for a clinic visit once a year for five years. They also must get an annual mammogram from their own health care provider.

This international study, funded by the National Cancer Institute of Canada, will involve more than 5,000 women. Fred Hutchinson needs to recruit 400 participants from the Seattle area.
