UW alumna Wendy Yamashita returns to perform Jan. 31
School of Music alumna and pianist Wendy Yamashita will return to the UW for a visiting artist recital at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, in Brechemin Auditorium.
Yamashita, now on the faculty of University of Hawaii in Manoa, will perform a program that will include Chopin’s Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise, Op. 22 and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
A Presidential Scholar, Yamashita has been recognized for her outstanding achievements in the arts by President Ronald Reagan, and received several commendations from the State of Hawaii. As a musical representative of Hawaii, she performed for Her Imperial Highness Princess Norinomiya of Japan, the Consul General of Japan and the President of the United States.
After graduating from the University Laboratory School in Honolulu, Yamashita earned her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School, and completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree under Robin McCabe at the UW.
Yamashita has performed several times with the Honolulu Symphony and has appeared as guest artist with the Maui POPS! Orchestra, Maui Symphony, Hawaii Symphony, Seattle Philharmonic, University of Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and the UW’s Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.
As a recitalist and chamber music artist, Ms. Yamashita has delighted audiences throughout the U.S. and internationally, including the United Kingdom and Japan. She has performed at major American venues such as Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Her performances have also been featured on Hawaii Public Radio as well as on National Public Radio and television.
