Concerto Competition winners solo with the UW Symphony Jan. 29

The UW Symphony will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, with some very special soloists — the winners of the School of Music’s Concerto Competition, held in November. Nathan Harrenstein, cello; Ruth Mar, harp; and Edward Park, piano were chosen from among 25 hopefuls in the annual competition, which is open to any student signed up for applied music lessons.

Each student prepares a 15-minute segment of a concerto for the performance. Harrenstein will be performing Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1, conducted by Julia Tai; Mar Ginastera’s Harp Concerto, conducted by Meena Hwang; and Park Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, conducted by Peter Eros.

Flutist Maggie Stapleton will also solo, playing Griffes’ Poem for Flute and Orchestra, conducted by Meena Hwang. And the symphony will perform Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, conducted by Julia Tai.

The concert will be in Meany Theater. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Arts Ticket Office, 206-543-4880, or online at www.meany.org.
