UW prof, alum present work from their residency in China
Rebecca Cummins and Margie Livingston, Work from the Shenzen Residency will be presented at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery Jan. 14-Feb 7. The exhibit showcases work from the artists’ time living in the economic and urban center of the Guangdong province in the summer of 2008.
Cummins is a photography professor at the UW whose work for this exhibition explores the experience of light and momentary photography. The combination of these themes is expressed in multiple photographs of the Shenzhen sky taken at different intervals of the day, spanning one week. This and other works featured in the exhibition capture the temporal fluidity of the changing surroundings by quantifying segments of the day through light and movement.
Livingston is an MFA graduate and 2005 winner of the Alumni Award from the UW School of Art. Her work from Shenzhen explores the architectural and sculptural structures referencing commonly used bamboo scaffolding. These structures are manifested through studies constructed in her studio, which she then reduces to compositions on canvas capturing the essence of space and light.
The opening reception for the exhibit is from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13. The artists will also give a presentation on their Shenzhen experience at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 in 003 Art.
