Martin Luther King tributes planned at Harborview, Health Sciences

Two separate programs, one at Harborview Medical Center on Friday, Jan. 9, and one at the Health Sciences Building on Thursday, Jan. 15, will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Harborview’s program, “Realizing Opportunities,” will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, in the cafeteria. Deborah Horne from KIRO-TV will be the emcee, and Alula Asfaw, a recent UW graduate who started The Dream Project, an outreach and service-learning program, will be the keynote speaker. The program will also feature remarks by King County Executive Ron Sims; Eileen Whalen, Harborview executive director; and Dr. William Fallon, president of the Harborview board of trustees. Musical entertainment will be provided by Pastor Patrinell “Pat” Wright, founder/director of the Total Experience Gospel Choir, an internationally recognized gospel singing group. Refreshments will be served.

The Health Sciences program, jointly sponsored by Health Sciences Administration and UW Medical Center, will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, in the Health Sciences Lobby. Steve Zieniewicz, executive director of UW Medical Center, will host the event. The theme, “A Dream Realized: Forward Together with Hope,” will provide focus for the keynote speaker, Enrique Cerna, executive director of production for KCTS public television, and the student speaker, Clarita Lefthand, of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. The Eckstein Middle School Jazz Band, a perennial favorite at this event, will provide music. Jourdan Keith will read poetry, the UW African Students Association Ethiopian Dance group will perform, and members of the Prospect Choir will sing. In addition, Community Service Awards for health sciences faculty, staff or students will be presented and the Health Sciences Center’s Distinguished Service Award will be announced.

Both programs are free and open to the UW community and the public.
