The sounds of singing: Opera, chorales, chamber singers and CarolFest coming from School of Music
The sounds of singing will herald fall’s transition into the holiday season at the School of Music. Voices will be lifted in several ways in coming days — in opera, songs of autumn, choral works on nature and, of course, the annual holiday CarolFest.
Students of Tom Harper, Joyce Guyer, Jane Eaglen, Giselle Wyers and Tess Altiveros will present a celebration in song of autumn, harvest, and Thanksgiving in the Voice Division Recital, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, in Brechemin Auditorium. Program selections include works by Bernstein, Debussy, Strauss, Barber, Schubert, Faure, and more, and tickets are $5, cash or check at the door. For more information, call 206-685-8384.
The UW’s premier choral groups, the Chamber Singers and University Chorale, will fuse wildness with wonder in songs of nature and spirituality from a variety of faiths and cultures at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in Meany Hall. Program selections include O Viridissima Virga, by Janika Vandervelde; Little Tree, by Stephen Heitzig; O Vera Digna Hostia, by Tarik O’Regan, and new works by Wyers, University Chorale conductor.
CarolFest, the UW’s annual celebration of holiday song, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in Meany Hall. The evening will feature The Chamber Singers, University Chorale, University Singers, Gospel Choir, Vocal Jazz ensembles, Men’s Glee Club, and UW Women’s Choir. All choirs, including about 500 singers, will join together for a humorous finale, “A Musicological Journey through the Twelve Days of Christmas.” Tickets for this special evening are $10.
Finally, UW music students will perform opera scenes from Le Nozze Di Figaro, Carmen, La Traviata, Fidelio and more in the Fall Opera Workshop, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Meany Studio Theater. Noel Koran will direct. All tickets are $10.
