School of Music ensembles present jazz, percussion and more
Ensembles will rule in instrumental presentations in coming days from the School of Music. Percussion and jazz ensembles will perform, and the Wind Ensemble will team with the symphonic and concert bands for an evening of music.
The UW Percussion Ensemble will present The Beat Goes On at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, in the Meany Studio Theater. The ensemble will perform pieces by Gen Parchman, Phillip Lambro and Nishihara Taiki. Marc Seales, director of jazz studies, will perform two pieces with the ensemble: a special arrangement of a theme from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8 and Blues And Chaser by Jared Spears. An all-star high school percussion ensemble, directed by UW alum Ian Alvarez, also will perform several pieces on the program. Tickets are $10.
The Studio Jazz Ensemble and the Modern Jazz Contingent, student jazz ensembles coached by Cuong Vu, will perform works by Bill Holman, Thad Jones, Bill Evans, Maurice White, David Fiuczynski, Vu himself and more at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 3, in Meany Hall. Tickets are $10.
The UW Wind Ensemble will team with the symphonic, concert and campus bands for an evening titled Passages at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in Meany Hall. The Wind Ensemble and Concert and Campus Bands will perform Circuits, by Cindy McTee; A Cornfield in July and The River, by William Penn; The Winds of Nagual, by Michael Colgrass and other works. Faculty artist Thomas Harper will be the featured soloist on the Wind Ensemble’s performance — conducted by Eric Smedley — of A Cornfield in July and The River. Tickets are $10.
