Stephen E. Hanson selected as vice provost, UW Office of Global Affairs
University of Washington Provost Phyllis Wise announced today that Stephen E. Hanson will become vice provost, UW Office of Global Affairs, effective Jan. 5.
“I am confident that under Steve’s leadership, the Office of Global Affairs will make invaluable contributions to the university as a whole,” Wise said.
The Office of Global Affairs provides leadership and strategy for the university’s increasing work beyond the United States.
Hanson replaces Susan Jeffords, who was the first vice provost for the Office of Global Affairs. She is now vice chancellor for academic affairs at UW Bothell.
A UW faculty member since 1990, Hanson is the Herbert J. Ellison Professor of Political Science. He received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1985 and his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1991. Since 2000, he has been director of the Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies at the Jackson School of International Studies.
Among his publications are “Time and Revolution: Marxism and the Design of Soviet Institutions,” which received the 1998 Wayne S. Vucinich book award from the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. He is co-author of “Postcommunism and the Theory of Democracy” and co-editor of “Capitalism and Democracy in Eastern and Central Europe: Assessing the Legacy of Communist Rule.”
Hanson won the UW’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2004 and its outstanding undergraduate mentor award in 2005. He has been a visiting associate professor of government at Harvard, a visiting scholar at Harvard and Oxford University and a research scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington, D.C.
Hanson has received grants from the Social Science Research Council, the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Education and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation.
His annual salary will be $192,000.
