A variety of styles coming in performance from the School of Music
Student jazz and chamber music, a Chinese zither soloist and a Hindustani vocalist are among musical performances offered by the School of Music in coming days.
Students of Heidi Lehwalder, Donna Shin and Melia Watras will perform a program of chamber music at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in Brechemin Auditorium. Program selections will include Debussy’s trio for flute, viola, and harp; Devienne’s duo for flute and viola and Persichetti serenade for flute and harp. Tickets are $5, cash or check at the door.
Student jazz ensembles coached by Marc Seales, Tom Collier, Cuong Vu and Phil Sparks will present original compositions and selections from jazz literature in two evenings of performance, Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 19 and 20. Both concerts are at 7:30 p.m. in Brechemin Auditorium. Program selections include such titles as “Seattle Schmeg,” “It’s Cold Outside,” “Ancient Fish” and “Another Sad Soul Lost to LaRouche’s Fleet of Youth Zombies.” Tickets for both nights are $5, cash or check at the door.
The school’s Ethnomusicology Division will present a two-part free concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in Brechemin Auditorium. The first half of the concert will feature Yu Qi, a guzheng (Chinese zither) virtuoso who earned a master’s degree through the Ethnomusicology Program in 2007. The second half will feature Hindustani classical vocalist Arijit Mahalanabis, accompanied by guest artists Sunny Matharu on tabla and Mohan Bhide on harmonium.
Uruguyan guitarist Eduardo Fernandez, who will perform in Benaroya Hall on Nov. 15, will conduct a master class at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in 213 Music. The class is free and open to the public.
