Woodstick 2008 to benefit hearing research at UW

Celebrity and amatueur drummers in nine cities in the United States and Canada will attempt the world record for the number of drummers playing the same tune at the same time in the same place via the Internet at www.woodstickevent.com. Woodstick 2008 takes place Sunday, Nov. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m., in the Juanita High School Field House, 10601 NE 132nd, Kirkland, Wash. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.

The event is a fundraiser for research conducted at the UW’s Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center. The center includes more than 50 UW faculty investigating a range of hearing and balance issues, such as how to restore hearing to the inner ear after loss due to noise, aging or genetically caused deafness; understanding and prevention of genetic mutations that cause hearing and balance impairments; and developing drugs to prevent hearing loss.

Celebrity drummers in attendance will include Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden), Michael Derosier (Heart), Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse), and Tony Coleman (B.B. King). Other participants include UW physicians and scientists from the Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center, and UW Husky marching band director Brad McDavid.
