Trombone, piano featured in upcoming concerts

Two visiting artists will perform at the School of Music in the next week. Bass trombone player Jonathan Warburton will be here Monday, Oct. 20, and pianist Graham Scott will come on Friday, Oct. 24.

One of England’s most versatile performers of the bass trombone, Warburton performs selections including Fire, by Gareth Wood; his own Almost Swing; Sonata in 6:30, by Claude Pascal; Tubaroque, by Roger Boutry; and the world premiere of Trunk, by Adam Gorb.

Warburton will also lead a master class with UW instrumental music students at 5 p.m. in Brechemin Auditorium, preceding the 7:30 recital. The class is free for students and is open to the public for observation. Tickets for the recital are $10 at the door.

Graham Scott, head of the School of Keyboard Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, performs Chopin’s Sonata No. 2; Scriabin’s Sonata No.3; and Gershwin’s (transcribed by Earl Wild) Grande Fantasy on Porgy and Bess. The 7:30 p.m. recital in Brechemin Auditorium kicks off The Donald E. Petersen and Ruth Sutton Waters Guest Piano Series, a new series organized by UW faculty artists Craig Sheppard and Robin McCabe to bring world-class concert pianists to the School of Music for a series of performances and master classes. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Scott also leads a master class with UW piano students at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, in Brechemin Auditorium. Admission to the master class is free and open to the public for observation.
