Discussions of Common Book planned
When Luis Alberto Urrea, author of this year’s Common Book, The Devil’s Highway, appears in Kane Hall Oct. 22, he’ll be greeted by a full house. Registration for the event is closed, but if you’ve read the book, you can participate in discussions of it led by UW librarians. Discussions are scheduled:

• 3-4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, Petersen Room, Allen Library
• 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, Petersen Room, Allen Library
• 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, Petersen Room, Allen Library
• 3:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, Petersen Room, Allen Library
The Devil’s Highway, a nonfiction account of a group of Mexican immigrants lost in the Arizona desert, won the Lannan Literary Award in 2004 and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the Pacific Rim Kiriyama Prize. A national best-seller, The Devil’s Highway was also named a best book of the year by the Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, Chicago Tribune, Kansas City Star and many other publications.
The critically acclaimed author of 11 books, Urrea is an award-winning novelist, poet and essayist. With a Mexican father and an American mother, he uses his dual-culture life experiences to explore greater themes of love, loss and triumph.
