Jazz from School of Music on June 4, 7

Looking for some jazz for a warm spring evening? The UW School of Music has two offerings for jazzoids in coming days, both instrumental and vocal.


The Studio Jazz Ensemble and Advanced Jazz Ensemble, both directed by faculty artist Cuong Vu; and the Modern Jazz Contingent directed by faculty artist Marc Seales, will perform original compositions and works by jazz greats in UW Studio Jazz, an evening of music at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, in Meany Theater.


The Studio Jazz Ensemble will play works by Duke Ellington, Fred Sturm and Pat Metheny. The Advanced Jazz Ensemble will play original compositions by Andrew Swanson, Luke Bergman, Aaron Otheim and Chris Speed. The Modern Jazz Contingent, a 12-member student jazz ensemble, will play original compositions as well as works by jazz greats. All tickets are $10.


Vocal jazz will be the order of the evening in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, in Brechemin Auditorium.


The groups UW Vocal Jazz 1 and UW Women’s Vocal Jazz will present selections by Sonny Rollins, Benny Carter, Ken Albers, John Hendricks, Jacques Rizzo and Sonja Sarr. Jazz Studies major Ivan Arteaga will be the featured guest soloist with both vocal jazz ensembles. All tickets are $5, cash or check at the door.


The program will include selections such as “The Look of Love,” “Imagination,” “My Romance” and “Some of These Days,” all arranged by Dave Cross, as well as “Selections from Oleo” by Sonny Rollins and “It’s Meeting Time” by Benny Carter.
