A variety of styles on stage this week from School of Music

American folk songs, gospel numbers with special guests, chamber singing and an evening of performance from combined UW choirs all are among events being presented by the UW School of Music in the next week.


Let’s take things chronologically.



  • The University Chorale, recently returned from a concert tour to San Francisco, will perform a musical celebration of the Americas in Rediscovering America, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 2, in Meany Theater.


Conducted by Giselle Wyers, the chorale will have a special focus on contemporary composers, including Ronaldo Miranda, Sid Robinovitch, Carmen Cavallaro and Leonard Mark Lewis. The program will feature American folk songs and Latin American choral tangos and carols as well as lighter fare by Rodgers and Hammerstein — previously performed under the direction of Marvin Hamlisch with The Seattle Symphony in March 2008. Tickets will be $10.



  • UW Sings will be an evening of performance by the University Singers, the Women’s Choir and the Men’s Glee Club at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, in Meany Theater.


Performances by The University Singers, directed by Heather MacLaughlin Garbes, will include a Russian and a Brazilian folk song and a Norwegian lullaby. Tunes by the Men’s Glee Club, directed by Steven M. Demorest, will include “Aura Lee (Love Me Tender),” “Vive L’Amour,” “Heard it Through the Grapevine”; soprano Joyce Guyer will be the guest soloist on “Amor,” by Monteverdi. Selections by The Women’s Choir, directed by Jean-Marie Kent, will include “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked as well as “Ave Maria,” “Heart” and “What a Wonderful World.” Tickets will be $10.



  • The UW Gospel Choir, conducted by Phyllis Byrdwell and featuring special guests the Mount Zion Gospel Choir, will offer a selection of hymns, ballads, call-and-response numbers and other expressions of the Gospel tradition at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5, in Meany Theater.


The choir will perform numbers by Walter and Tramaine Hawkins, Richard Smallwood and Donald Lawrence, with titles including “Total Praise,” “Pass Me Not,” “Prayer of Jabez” and “Be Grateful.” Tickets are $10.



  • The UW Chamber Singers, conducted by Geoffrey Boers, will perform Monteverdi’s epic 1610 Vespers for chorus and soloists, with special early music guest artists, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, in Meany Theater. Tickets will be 10.
