Corigliano Quartet to appear at Meany Hall May 22

The acclaimed Corigliano Quartet will visit the UW for a concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 22, in Meany Hall. The event is presented by the UW World Series.

Hailed as one of today’s most exciting and dynamic string quartets, the Corigliano Quartet was founded in 1996 with the blessing of Pulitzer, Grammy, and Oscar-winning composer John Corigliano, who praised the group’s “fiery intensity, musical sensitivity, and bold programming.”

The Corigliano Quartet is dedicated to presenting new American music as well as the standard quartet repertoire. For its UW World Series performance, the quartet will play Dan Visconti’s Ballads and Broken Rhymes, Adam Silverman’s Corrie Q’s Jigs and Reels and John Corigliano’s String Quartet.

The quartet has won the acclaim of audiences and critics across the country. The New York Times commented that the group has “an excellent, smooth sense of ensemble, but with each part vigorously alive.” The quartet’s recent CD release of string quartet works by John Corigliano and Jefferson Friedman was named as one of The New Yorker’s Top Ten Classical Recordings of 2007. The CD, available on the Naxos label, prompted Gramophone magazine to remark, “The unbridled force and full-metal virtuosity that the Corigliano Quartet unleash on this music is astounding.”

The group has performed in many of the nation’s leading music centers, including Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress. Recent performances have taken the ensemble to Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, DC. They have also played in Italy, Mexico and Korea, and have been heard on numerous radio broadcasts, including NPR’s “All Things Considered.”

Tickets for the concert are $33, $30 for subscribers or $20 for students, and may be purchased by phone or in person through the UW Arts Ticket Office, 206-543-4880 or online at www.uwworldseries.org. You can also learn more about the UW World Series at that Web site.

Ticket holders are invited to come early on performance nights for a free 30-minute pre-show lecture in Meany Hall’s west lobby, at about 7:15 p.m.
