Contemporary Group and Composer’s Workshop coming from School of Music

In coming days the School of Music will present students and faculty performing together for the Contemporary Group and a Composers Workshop of new music written and performed by students.


Student and faculty musicians will perform new music selections in a concert of the UW Contemporary Group, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, in Meany Theater.


Highlights will include student Chris Lennard (percussion) performing Iannis Xenakis’ Rebond, student Lee Hancock (piano) performing William Bolcom’s Nine New Bagatelles, students Haeyoon Shin (cello) and Alastair Edmondstone (piano) performing Elliott Carter’s Sonata for Cello and Piano and faculty artists Donna Shin (flute) and Sean Osborn (clarinet) performing UW faculty composer Joël-Françoise Durand’s In the Mirror Land.

On May 23, student composers from the School of Music will present the Spring Composer’s Workshop at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, in Brechemin Auditorium.


Student composers will use both new and old technology to present original works in this evening of sonic expeditions. Highlights will include graduate student Doug Niemala’s Verso Libero, a piece for surround sound; and graduate student Richard Johnson’s The Tree With Lights In It, a surround-sound computer recording.
