World music, guitars, jazz from School of Music

The UW School of Music will offer concerts of jazz, guitar pieces and world music in coming days.


  • Student jazz ensembles coached by faculty jazz artists Marc Seales, Tom Collier, Phil Sparks and Cuong Vu will perform original and contemporary works and selections from the standard jazz literature in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, in Brechemin Auditorium.
  • Students of guitar instructor Michael Partington will present a recital of music for guitar solo, duo and trio from the Renaissance to the 21st century in a concert titled Guitar Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, in Brechemin Auditorium. The program includes students Daniel Kashima, Chaz Rogers and Anton Sinkov performing their own compositions; songs by the English lutenist John Dowland for soprano and guitar, featuring Hayley Baudrau Gaarde and Dan Lee; and selections by Scarlatti, Soler, Diabelli, von Call, John Johnson, and Scottish song arrangements by Ed Flower.
  • The Modern Jazz Contingent, a 12-member student ensemble under the direction of faculty artist Marc Seales, will perform a lively one-hour set from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 17, on the Community Stage — at the corner of NE 42nd Street and Brooklyn Avenue Northeast — at the University District Street Fair. The event is free.
  • The School of Music’s Ethnomusicology Division will present its student concert of music from around the world at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, in Brechemin Auditorium. Featured ensembles will include the UW Bawa Ensemble performing North Ghanaian xylophone music and dance; North Indian Dhrupad vocalists; the UW Steelband; Mongolian horse-head fiddle music; and West African guitar music.
