Poet and playwright to perform May 8 at UW Tacoma
Internationally renowned author, poet, and playwright Carlos Andres Gomez will read his poetry on Thursday, May 8 at UW Tacoma.
Clover Park High School’s step dance team, The Earthquake, will open the show at UW Tacoma’s Longshoremen’s Hall, 1710 Market Street. The event begins with refreshments at 6 p.m., and performances begin at 6:45 p.m.
Gomez will perform poetry from his latest books, Without Shame, Finding the Music, Shades of Silence, and Thunder and Burning Shrapnel and forthcoming CD, Fate by the Throat. An award-winning poet and playwright, Gomez has based much of his work on his experiences as a social worker and public school teacher in New York City.
Praised for his ability to teach through art, Gomez has performed at hundreds of colleges and universities around the world and is a creative producer and mentor for young poets involved in Myth of the Motherland, a documentary addressing myths and biases about Africa. Champion of the 2006 International Poetry Slam and two-time finalist at the National Poetry Slam, he appeared on the sixth season of HBO’s Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam. He recently completed a month-long run of his critically acclaimed one-man play, Man UP, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
