Visiting professor for cardiothoracic surgery to lecture May 2

Dr. David A. Fullerton will be the UW’s 17th Annual Visiting Professor for Cardiothoracic Surgery. He will deliver a lecture, Aortic Stenosis: from Bedside to Bench, at 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, in K-069, Health Sciences Center.


Fullerton is professor of surgery and head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia, and completed a residency in general surgery at the UW, including one year of research in coronary physiology. In 1990, Fullerton also completed a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Colorado, where he served on faculty and helped establish the adult and pediatric heart and lung transplant programs and was funded by the National Institutes of Health to study pulmonary hypertension. In 1996, he was recruited to Northwestern University in Chicago as chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Program director for the Thoracic Surgery residency program. After seven years in Chicago, he was then recruited back to the University of Colorado as head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.


Fullerton has served as a member of the Surgery, Anesthesia and Trauma Study Section of the NIH. He has published more than 135 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has served on the editorial board of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Journal of Surgical Research. He is a member of the major surgical societies, including the Society of University Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, and the Society of Clinical Surgery. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons and is a director of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He has been recognized on numerous “Best Doctors” lists over the past decade.
