4th Annual Washington Weekend set for April 24-26

From Gerberding Hall to the Graves Building, Suzzallo Library to Savery Hall, it’s a safe bet that many UW employees have seen only bits and pieces of what the campus as a whole has to offer.

Ever wondered what goes on inside the Earth and Space Sciences building? Been wanting to tour the Medicinal Herb Garden and Botany Greenhouse? Want to check out the Huskies’ spring football game?

Well, here’s your chance.

The UW will open its doors for a weekend of tours, talks, Husky sporting events and hands-on exhibits when it hosts the fourth annual Washington Weekend from April 24 to 26 at all three UW campuses.

Faculty and staff are invited, along with the public, to attend all of the weekend’s festivities. Whether you’re into drama and dance or Native American arts and crafts, there’s something for everybody.

More than 85 events are planned, and most are free.

“The UW Alumni Association is proud to host Washington Weekend for the fourth time,” says UWAA Executive Director Chuck Blumenfeld. “This is a great opportunity for people to see what the UW has to offer, and it promises to be a wonderful weekend and a very memorable experience.”

Washington Weekend highlights include:

  • Hear local and FBI security agents talk about real-world computer threats, then take a trip to Microsoft headquarters in Redmond to witness a Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition that challenges teams of college students to manage and protect a commercial network infrastructure from an online attack by another team.
  • Tour the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences as part of its “Explore the Living Oceans” open house, where you can climb aboard the 274-foot, state-of-the-art, ocean-going research vessel Thomas G. Thompson. Check out the boat, meet the researchers and find out what they do when they’re so far out at sea.
  • Attend a papermaking demonstration hosted by the College of Forest Resources. See and feel the pulp before it’s made into paper, and learn about common and quirky renewable resources that can be used in the papermaking process.
  • Explore family friendly open houses at the Department of Earth and Space Sciences and the College of Engineering. Tour the UW Seismology Lab and learn about earthquakes and volcanoes, or interact with robots and make liquid nitrogen ice cream.
  • Visit popular campus locations such the Medicinal Herb Garden, Botany Greenhouse and School of Music. And be sure to ask about the decades-old writing on the newsroom wall during a tour of the UW’s student-run newspaper, The Daily, in the Communications Building.
  • Catch your first glimpse of the 2008 Husky football team at its annual purple & gold spring scrimmage at Husky Stadium on Saturday, April 26. Bring your kids to a special meet-the-Huskies youth clinic prior to the game, or stop by the UW Alumni Association / Big “W” Pancake Breakfast beginning at 10 a.m. in the south end of Husky Stadium.
