Live broadcasts, webcasts planned for Dalai Lama





Expect traffic congestion at Hec Ed


Traffic may be congested around Hec Edmondson Pavilion this week as it hosts several events related to the Dalai Lama’s visit to Seattle.


Events at Hec Ed are:




  • 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 11


  • 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, April 14


  • 9:30 to 1:45 Tuesday, April 15

Each of these events is expected to draw about 8,000 people to the Bank of America Arena. People who need to drive in the vicinity should expect delays.


Parking lot E-1 will be the designated lot for those attending any of the three events.

If you weren’t one of the lucky few to get tickets to see the Dalai Lama during his Seattle visit, you can still hear what he has to say. UWTV will present several live broadcasts and live webcasts of his visit to Seattle and the UW. The Dalai Lama will participate in the five-day Seeds of Compassion initiative from April 11 to 15, and will be honored by the UW at a special convocation on April 14.

The schedule is as follows:


  • The Scientific Basis for Compassion: What We Know Now & What We All Can Do, 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 11. The Dalai Lama will be joined by a panel of leading researchers, including Andrew Meltzoff, co-director of the UW Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences, to discuss the quantitative benefits of compassion and science.

  • From Knowledge to Compassion Action: What We All Can Do, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 11. The Dalai Lama will be joined by leaders in the area of compassion and empathy for a wide-ranging discussion of how parents and educators can bring compassion into the lives of children and families.

  • Children & Youth Day, 10:45 a.m. to noon Monday, April 14, performances and programs designed to teach children about compassion. His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be joined by 15,500 students and educators from 25 counties in Washington state.

  • Convocation at the UW, 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, April 14. The University will present the Dalai Lama with an honorary degree in recognition of his humanitarianism, advocacy of non-violence and promotion of compassion and understanding. During this special convocation, the Dalai Lama will speak with college students from throughout Washington state about compassion in civic responsibility.

  • Interspiritual Panel Discussion with the Dalai Lama, 9:30 to 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 15. The Dalai Lama will be joined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other spiritual leaders to discuss themes common to all spiritual traditions.

  • Interspiritual Panel Discussion, second session, 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 15. Several local and national spiritual and religious leaders will discuss the most practical ways to implement compassion in our daily lives.
