2008 Health Sciences Open House set for April 25 & 26

The 2008 Health Sciences Open House, “A Path with Promise,” is almost here. The event, held every two years, takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, April 25, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in the Health Sciences Center.

The fun and interactive event will showcase more than 65 exhibits highlighting the innovative services, resources and projects of faculty, staff and students in the six schools of health sciences — dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health and community medicine, and social work.

Historically, the event has drawn thousands of high school students and community members from throughout the region who are interested in seeing first-hand what the UW Health Sciences Schools and UW Medicine have to offer.

Dr. Wendy Mouradian is the honorary chair of this year’s open house. She is associate dean of Regional Affairs for the UW School of Dentistry and director of the Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE) program. Mouradian, also clinical professor of pediatrics, pediatric dentistry, dental public health sciences and health services, has a longstanding interest in community-based education. She is nationally recognized leader in bringing attention to the importance of oral health to the medical community.

The Health Sciences Open House is one of the UW’s best community-building events, Mauradian says. “This year’s open house offers educators and parents a multitude of ‘teachable moments.’ This open house affords us with a rare opportunity to inspire kids today to realize that science is cool.”
