Gospel and jazz singing featured in School of Music concerts March 8, 10

Gospel and jazz singing will be presented by the School of Music in two upcoming concerts.


The UW’s Vocal Jazz 1 group and its Women’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble, both under the direction of Dave Cross, will present Vocal Jazz Night II at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, in Brechemin Auditorium.


Selections on the program include “Anthropology” by Charlie Parker, “Recipe for Love” by Harry Connick Jr., “Pent Up House” by Sonny Rollins, “Look for the Silver Lining” by Jerome Kern, “Come On Home” by Horace Silver, “Refuse the Blues” by Sonja Sarr, “Oop-Pop-A-Dah” by Lee Brown, “Big Benny Bebop” by Ken Kraintz, “Lullaby on the Hudson” by Larry Goldings and Curtis Stigers and “Joy Spring” by Clifford Brown.

The 100-voice UW Gospel Choir, conducted by Phyllis Birdwell, will perform a selection of hymns, ballads, call-and-response numbers, and other expressions of the Gospel tradition at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 10, in Meany Theater.


John P. Kee, Hezekiah Walker and Richard Smallwood are among the composers on the program. Titles include “Psalm 8,” “I Almost Let Go,” “Wonderful Is Your Name” and “I’m Still Standing.”
