Annual Katterman Lecture set for April 12

“Pharmacist-Driven Health Care: Asheville and Beyond” is the topic for the Pharmacy Alumni Association’s annual Katterman Lecture, set for 8:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 12, in T-435 Health Sciences Center. The speaker is John Miall, former risk assessment manager for the City of Asheville, N.C., and now president of Miall Consulting. He is a consultant to the American Pharmaceutical Association, the largest national pharmacists group.

In Asheville, Miall developed a health-care program that teamed pharmacists with other providers to lower health-care costs and improve employee productivity. The program focused on chronic disease management for employees with conditions such as diabetes, asthma or cardiovascular disease. The program has been praised for its long-lasting clinical and economic success, and has been one factor in increasing national interest in contracts with employers or insurers to develop pharmacist-driven programs.

The lecture is named for the late Don B. Katterman, first president of the Pharmacy Alumni Association. It is open to everyone, with a cost of $25 to attend or $65 with continuing education credit.
