Standards and originals — jazz this week from the School of Music

Jazz compositions both classic and original will be performed in two concerts this coming week, presented by the School of Music.


The Studio Jazz Ensemble, directed by Cuong Vu, and the Modern Jazz Contingent, directed by Marc Seales, will play in concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, in Meany Theater.


The evening will feature some old favorites such as Cottontail by Duke Ellington and Cheek to Cheek by Irving Berlin, and new material such as Who is My Neighbor, composed and arranged by student ensemble performer Mat Montgomery, as well as compositions by student ensemble artist Andrew Swanson.

And then student jazz ensembles coached by Seales, Vu, Tom Collier and Phil Sparks will perform original and contemporary works as well as jazz standards in a concert titled Jazz Innovations II at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, in the Brechemin Auditorium.


The groups will play well-known numbers by The Beatles, McCoy Tyner, Pat Metheny, Miles Davis and Bill Evans as well as new compositions.
