Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Lecture on Feb. 21

Palliative care is the topic of the 28th annual Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Lecture, A Call for Reform: New Ways to Ease the Pain, Symptoms and Stress of Serious Illness. The lecture takes place at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, in 130 Kane Hall.

The speakers are Dr. Betty Ferrell, oncology nurse and research scientist at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, Calif.; and Dr. Charles F. von Gunten, medical director for the Center for Palliative Studies at San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care, and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Palliative Medicine. They will discuss ways health care providers can improve care to the sick and dying.

Ferrell, a researcher and oncology nurse in practice for 29 years, has expertise in pain management, quality of life and palliative care. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, a member of the National Cancer Policy Forum, and chair of both the National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care and the Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative.

Von Gunten is the medical director at the Center for Palliative Studies at San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care, a teaching affiliate of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. In addition, he serves as a trustee of the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and as a consultant on end-of-life care to the National Board of Medical Examiners.

The Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Lecture honors the founding dean of the UW School of Nursing. The lecture is presented in partnership by the UW School of Nursing and the UW Alumni Association. Admission is free, the lecture is open to the public.
