Tally up your tonnage — it’s time again for RecycleMania
RecycleMania, the national intercollegiate recycling contest, started small in 2001. But like the amount of recyclable materials the annual contest inspires it grew — very large, very quickly. The 10-week competition is back again for 2008.
More than 200 colleges and universities in 42 states now compete to see who can collect the most recyclables in the contest. In 2007, more than 41 million pounds of recyclables and organics were recovered from 201 colleges and universities.
This year the UW has entered the Per Capita Classic, which is the original RecycleMania competition where schools compete to see which can collect the largest amount of acceptable recyclables per person. The UW also will go for the Gorilla Prize. Appropriately named for its hugeness, the Gorilla Prize goes to the school with the highest total tonnage of materials during the competition, regardless of campus population.
