Chiara String Quartet to perform Nov. 27

The Chiara String Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Meany Hall, as part of the UW World Series.

These Juilliard-trained musicians have attracted new audiences to chamber music, thanks to their infectious performance style, progressive approach, and unique programming. For the UW World Series, they will present Mestizaje: Harmony of Differences, featuring works created by composers who straddle two (or more) cultures, incorporating folk melodies and other cultural influences into their original compositions.

Pronounced “mess-tiz-AH-hay,” mestizaje is defined by Peruvian author Jose Maria Arguedas as an artistic expression of multicultural nationality in which divergent cultures come together without one subjugating the other. In their program, the Chiara Quartet uses Frank’s composition Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout as a guide to help lead the audience through each section’s musical landscape. Other works on the program are Song of the Ch’in, by Zhou Long; Yiddishbuk, by Osvaldo Golijov; and String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, by Bartok.

Ticket holders are invited to come early to learn more about this American quartet and their program at a free pre-show lecture. UW World Series pre-show lectures begin 45 minutes prior to curtain and take place in the Meany Hall west lobby.

Tickets for the performance are $33 general, $30 for subscribers and $20 for students. To purchase tickets, call 206-543-4880 or order online at www.uwworldseries.org.
