School of Music offers symphonic music, jazz this week

Barry Lieberman will perform with Seattle Symphony friends, Maestro Peter Eros will conduct the University Symphony playing a UW composer’s piece, and Tom Collier will jazz it up with visiting saxophonist Gary Herbig, all in concerts coming soon from the UW School of Music.

Violinist and Seattle Symphony Concertmaster Maria Larionoff and Elisa Barston, the symphony’s principal second violin, will join Lieberman, UW double bass artist, in a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Brechemin Auditorium. The trio, with Tonya Siderius on piano, will perform works by Corelli, Zelenka, Leclair, J.S. Bach, Shostakovich, Moszkowski and Sarasate.

The University Symphony, conducted by Eros, will play UW composer Joel-Francois Durand’s Four Musical Tales for orchestra, Haydn’s Symphony Concertante for four soloists and orchestra, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Meany Theater.

The Mallet Head Series will continue with a Tom Collier Presents… concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in Brechemin Auditorium. Los Angeles-based saxophonist Gary Herbig will join faculty artist Collier on vibes to play original music and jazz standards. Herbig’s new album, Montana Shooting Star, has received many positive reviews and several tunes from the CD will be featured in the concert. Faculty artist Marc Seales on piano, John Bishop on drums and Dan Dean on bass round out the quintet.
