Jazz, piano, marimbas and the University Symphony featured in upcoming concerts

From jazz vocals to marimbas and a guest pianist performing with the University Symphony, the UW School of Music offers a variety of musical pleasures in coming days.



  • Percussion students of Tom Collier will perform compositions either written or arranged for marimba in Wooden Music, a concert in the Mallet Head Series, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, in Brechemin Auditorium.   • Each of the singers in UW Vocal Jazz 1 and the UW Women’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble will get the chance to take the stage as a featured performer during Vocal Jazz Solo Night, starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in Brechemin Auditorium. All tickets are $5. 206-685-8384, or www.music.washington.edu
  • School of Music voice students will perform songs by a variety of composers in the Voice Division Recital, Songs of Spring and Summer, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 7, in Brechemin Auditorium. All tickets are $5. 206-685-8384, or www.music.washington.edu


Finally, guest pianist Oksana Ezhokina will perform with the University Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in Meany Theater.


A much-sought-after soloist and chamber musician and frequent soloist at concert series, Ezhokina was born in Russia and has won numerous piano competitions there and in the United States. Ezhokina is currently serving as associate director of the Icicle Creek Music Center in Leavenworth, Wash., and is a member of the piano faculty at Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts.


Ezhokina will perform César Franck’s Symphonic Variations for piano and orchestra. The orchestra also will perform Debussy’s Petite Suite for orchestra and Kodály’s Peacock Variations, based on a Hungarian folk song. School of Music Professor Peter Erös will conduct.
